Calpe
CALPE, COSTA BLANCA, SPAIN.
Calpe was originally a small fortified fishing village, and you can still see remnants of early settlements today. Located approximately a hour's drive from Alicante. The Old Town is well worth a visit with small narrow streets, museums, squares and many bars and restaurants, most of them with a lively terrace, an ideal place to spend a pleasant summer evening. There are two churches worth visiting in the centre of Calpe, the Senora de la Nieves and the Iglesia Antigua built in the 15th century.
Calpe is a good mixture of old and new living together in harmony and is fast becoming a favourite with tourists that want to explore the northern area of the Costa Blanca. The climate in Calpe is one of the mildest on the Costa Blanca due to it's position surrounding by mountains which protect from the strong north winds.
Calpe, the home of the Coast Blanca's equivalent of the "Rock of Gibraltar", "Il Peñon d'Ifach", is situated a short drive up the coast from Altea. "Il Peñon" is a magnificent rock which stands alone, rises to a height of 332 metres above sea level. It is now a nature reserve and is home to many diverse groups of birds along with other unusual fauna and flora.
There are plenty of sandy beaches to explore including the famous Levante and Arenal beaches, offering a diverse range of watersports including scuba diving, sailing, line and underwater fishing, windsurfing, paragliding and sailing.
For the golfers there are a choice of fine courses.
